Admittedly, it can be a hassle to read every ingredient on a food label in the grocery store, especially when you get down to the chemical compounds that might as well be written in Japanese. It however is in your best interest to know and understand what you are putting into your’s and your children’s bodies. Gone are those times when you could just trust the corporations and the government to watch out for you. These days they will stuff you like a turkey with all kinds of poison while you’re not looking, in “safe quantities” according to the FDA of course. Here are top sixteen food ingredients you should take the time to familiarise your self with and probably avoid, if you like to breathe.
Artificial colors including, but not limited to: Red 40, Blue 1, and Yellow 5 should be avoided, especially for children. They are common not only in food, but also in cosmetics and drugs. Though the FDA long stood by them being safe compounds, they have recently been linked to behavioral disorders in children.
BVO (Brominated Vegetable Oil)
BVO, or brominated vegetable oil, is a vegetable oil combined with the element bromine. It is used in soft drinks, particularly ones with citrus flavors. Consumption can result in a condition called bromism, which has a range of symptoms from memory loss, loss of coordination, fatigue and headaches. The biggest one that you should watch out for, especially if you are already on a pretty crappy diet, is thyroid disease. Your immune system gets weak, you get sick more and pharmaceutical corporations make more mula.
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
Vegetable oils are pretty much healthy on their own, but they become toxic during manufacturing processes which makes them thicker. The process which oil goes through to become that Twinkie cream or Crisco is nothing pretty. They heat it up to 500 degrees and then pressurize it and bubble aluminum dust through it. This changes the molecular structure of the oil and makes it thick or solid when cooled down. At this state, it is only one molecule away from becoming plastic. Consuming hydrogenated oil is very similar to consuming plastic. It also has molecules that are sort of sharp and get stuck inside the arteries which causes all kinds of havoc in your cardiovascular health.
Corn syrup is a sweetener made from corn, used in a great deal of processed foods and soft drinks. It is a major contributor to obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. The problem with it is that this ingredient is in so many processed foods. Many that eat processed foods all the time, will be consuming way too much of it and may gain weight and get diabetes as a result, which will also turn into heart disease and high blood pressure. Another big thing is that corn syrup will disable the triggers in the brain that tell us that we’re full. This makes us continue to gorge on the food that contains it until were ready to pop and can’t breath anymore. Other problems that were found in clinical studies were disturbance of liver function, and elevation in serum triglycerides in men. It’s the invisible ingredients that cause many problems. Also remember that it’s made from corn, most of which is genetically engineered, which I wrote about in an article of it’s own.
Sodium Nitrates and Nitrites
Sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) are very similar compounds. They are both preservatives that are common in processed meats and they are carcinogens. They are also appear naturally in vegetables but the reason they do not harm you when consumed in vegetable sources is because they’re balanced out with vitamin C that neutralizes the negative health affects. Sodium nitrite in particular has reactions with stomach acid, which release nitrosamines – cancer-causing chemicals. These things have been linked to leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and cancers like ovarian, colon, rectal, bladder, stomach, esophageal, pancreatic, and thyroid cancer. Solution, stay away from eating too many cured meats and eat more vitamin-C filled vegetables when you do.
Sodium benzoate (NaC7H5O2) is another food preservative, often occurring in salad dressings, jams, pickles, and other condiments that are acidic. It is the cheapest mold inhibiter that is available and so its a good money maker for corporations. The same chemical is used as fuel for fireworks. It is not only carcinogenic, but it has also been linked to hyperactivity disorders, Parkinson’s and neuro-degenerative diseases. This compound also steals oxygen from cells and lowers the immune system.
When a product claims to be sugar-free it is often sweetened with an artificial sweetener that has the same sweet flavor, but is lower in calories. People believe they are being healthy when choosing these options, but in reality a lot of artificial sweeteners not only increase appetite but they are also linked to cancer. Aspartame and sucralose are two horrifying compounds that artificial sweeteners contain. Aspartame can cause seizures and brain tumors, while sucralose enlarges your liver and kidneys and shrinks your thymus gland. Just choose sugar if you really need it sweet. Be strong and don’t cheat your self with artificial crap!
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
Monosodium glutamate, more commonly known as MSG, may be recognized as safe by the government, but many acknowledge it as a “silent killer.” It is worse for your health than both alcohol and nicotine, but it is added to an incredibly large amount of food in restaurants as well as processed foods. You can find it in everything from cans of soup to crackers. MSG is an excitotoxin, which means that it overstimulates your cells until they die. The type of brain damage it causes can be a factor in learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s. It is used to make food taste great…no, not taste great, it tricks your brain to enjoy whatever flavor the food really is, even if it really tastes like crap.
I did an experiment once, I took a package of Asian instant Shrimp Wonton soup from Costco and prepared it by pouring boiling water over it. The smell coming off of it, as it sat there hydrating, was horrible. My first taste of it was discust. I thought it was horrible and didn’t want to continue eating it. I took another taste of it and it was better. Guess what, the more I ate, the better it tasted. I ate the whole bowl. I saw the affects of MSG with my own eyes. MSG – we make crap taste great!
Bleached flour has been processed and refined to a point that all of the nutrients originally in the wheat are gone. The bleaching process that makes the flour white involves a chemical called chlorine oxide, which is lethal when inhaled. Not only does bleached flour have no nutritional value, but it also contains harmful toxins like chlorine oxide as well as alloxan, which is a byproduct of the process and is toxic to the kidneys and liver. Want some bleach in your pastries? Use bleached flour.
Sulfites are similar to nitrates and nitrites, but they are made of sulfur. They are another preservative and they are most commonly encountered in dried fruits, potatoes, shrimp, and wine. Sulfur is naturally occurring in a lot of fruits and problems arise when extra sulfur is added into food products. It can cause an assortment of stomach irritation as well as headaches.
Another major ingredient in processed food is soybean oil. It shares many properties with other hydrogenated oils. Soybean oil though, unlike other hydrogenated oils, does not even start out as a healthy oil. Before its anything close to oil, the crushed soy beans are soaked in a chemical called Hexane.
Hexane is classified as an air pollutant by the EPA and is a neurotoxin. Yes you read that right, soybeans are soaked in this neurotoxin to work it into the “cake” and mix with oil. Then after a nice long soak they filter and boil most of the Hexane out of the oil. A small, FDA approved “safe” amount of it stays along for the ride into your food and then into your brain. To add to that little wisdom, most soy grown today is genetically engineered, but even organic soybean oil is still extracted using Hexane.
Soy also naturally contains goitrogens, which interfere with thyroid production and also a number of chemicals similar the human estrogen hormone. Consumption of soy products can result in issues absorbing other nutrients like calcium and magnesium. Soybean oil can even interfere with healthy protein digestion.
Just stay away. The only reason it is on the market is because its cheap to make. Use olive oil, which is pressed, not chemically extracted.
Propylene Glycol Alginate (E405)
Propylene glycol alginate, PGA or E405 is a compound used as an industrial thickener in antifreeze, but it has somehow been approved as an acceptable food additive and thickening, emulsifying, and stabilizing agent. You can find it in a number of gel-like foods such as yogurt, jelly, and some ice cream. It can cause various stomach issues, rashes, birth defects, liver and kidney problems. What happened to cooking your jam or jelly with sugar until it gets nice and thick? It’s not enough we have microwaves to speed things up but now they add chemicals to speed up thickening and thickening things that were never meant to be thick. They wanna kill us I tells ya!
Polysorbate 60 is another emulsifier used in imitation creams and frozen desserts. Like PGA above, it can cause birth defects in pregnant women, but it can also result in organ toxicity and cancer. Just call it Cancerbate 60.
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)
Also like PGA, BHT is a food additive originally used as industrial additive, particularly in the petroleum industry. It is usually marketed as a health food supplement because it has some antioxidant properties. Unfortunately, it also has carcinogenic properties that are not boasted about.
Ammonium chloride mainly serves as a yeast additive. It flavors licorice and also makes cookies crispier. It can cause gastrointestinal upset and also skin irritation.
Sodium Aluminum Sulfate
Sodium aluminum sulfate, as its name suggests, contains aluminum. The metal accumulates over time in the brain and bones eventually affecting cognition and memory. Sodium aluminum sulfate is an ingredient in baking powder and thus in a lot of baked goods. Remember, people did survives thousands of years without all these chemical additives, they are only there to make things cheaper and quicker to mass produce. Learn how to cook and bake your self using ingredients that are real.
Enough Is Enough…
Why do we allow the corporations to market their colorful products to our children while the government knowingly allows them to hide poison inside?
How did our Grandmas go without all this crap!? Why does out generation try to destroy our selves and our children? Talk to grandmas you know and get recipes from them that don’t include these killer compounds and start cooking and baking with a clear conscience. Find the time.. it is important!
It all comes back to our own responsibility, forget politics, they don’t work, vote with your dollars. You don’t buy – they go broke. Before you know it they will go away without a fight.
